Sub Contractor Interpreter Requirements
GENERAL:
- High School level of education in the native language
- Native speaker of a language other than English or one of the following:
- State or Federal Court Interpreter certification
- Two (2) years of professional interpreter experience (e.g. staff interpreter in a hospital)
- Interpreter certification from the states of Washington or California
- Two (2) years living in a country of the foreign language
- For individuals with non-English native language – one of the following:
- Master-level degree in interpreting or translation (foreign language/English) from a non-US university
- TOEFL score no lower than 500
- One year of study completed at any US college or university
- Pass our English Proficiency test
- Pass our Medical Interpreter written quiz
COURT INTERPRETERS:
To qualify as a Court Interpreter, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
- State or Federal Court Interpreter certification
- Master-level degree in Court Interpreting from any college or university
- 2 years of employment as a court interpreter
- pass our Court Interpreter written quiz and ten (10) hours of observation of another International Institute Court Interpreter
- "Certificate of Completion" of a minimum of six (6) hours of court interpreter training and ten (10) hours of observation of another International Institute Court Interpreter
CONTINUING EDUCATION:
- Complete a minimim of 6 hours of professional continuing education every other year
- Attend the Annual Meeting of the Institute’s Interpreters (usually in February)
