Interpreting Services

The International Institute of Akron's Language Bank has more than 50 interpreters, proficient in 54 languages. It has been serving businesses, courts, hospitals, medical, social and legal service providers in the Greater Akron area, Summit, Portage and Stark Counties on a regular basis since the 1970s. We match background, skills and expertise of each interpreter to the assignment. Emergency face-to-face interpreting is available 24/7/365.

To Request an Interpreter, Please Provide:
  • Your name and phone number;
  • The foreign language you need an interpreter for;
  • The date and time of interpretation assignment;
  • The exact location of the interpretation assignment;
  • The name of the department and "provider" (e.g. doctor, judge, supervisor);
  • Name of your client who does not speak English;
  • The name of your agency and exact billing address.

You can stop by our offices during the following hours (without an appointment):

Monday - Thursday

8:30 am – 12:00 pm AND 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Friday

NO WALK-INS, by appointment ONLY

If you cannot come during the above hours, you may schedule an appointment within regular office hours (Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. -12 p.m. and 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) – please call or email us.

Interpreter and Translator- What's the Difference?

An Interpreter is a specially trained professional who renders a message spoken in one language into a second language with consistency and accuracy, and who abides by the Interpreter Code of Ethics.

A Translator is a trained professional who can 'replace' a written document in one language with the written document in another language.

Both professions require, in addition to a high command of the native and a foreign language, different skills. Not every interpreter can be a translator, and the opposite is equally true. Moreover, not every bilingual person (i.e. person who speaks two languages) can be either an interpreter or a translator.
