Reception and Placement Program
SPONSOR
The International Institute of Akron is the sponsor for the placement of refugees in the Akron area. Through our contract with the federal government, the Institute provides financial support to partially cover refugee expenses, basic necessities and core services. The goal of sponsorship is to assist refugees achieve economic self-sufficiency through employment as soon as possible after their arrival to the U.S.
CO-SPONSOR
Co-Sponsorship means an established community group, such as a church congregation or service organization, which is willing to accept a written agreement with the International Institute of Akron to provide or ensure the provision of reception and placement services to certain refugees sponsored by the International Institute of Akron.
CORE SERVICES PROVIDED TO REFUGEES
- Case management
- Airport reception
- Securing decent, safe and sanitary housing, utility accounts and telephone line
- Providing essential furnishings
- Giving food or food allowance
- Providing necessary clothing
- Creating resettlement plan
- Visiting refugees at home
- Referring refugees to appropriate services
- Coordinating refugee health screening
- Assisting in applying for Social Security card
- Assistance in applying for benefits at Summit County Job and Families Services
- Registering children to school
- Employment counseling and placement
- English as a Second Language classes
- Family reunion
- Case transfer
- Providing community orientation
Providing community orientation in refugee's native language: role of the Agency, general information about the US, public services and facilities, personal and public safety, public transportation, standards of personal and public hygiene, availability of other publicly supported services, immigration and family reunion procedures, housing, employment, transportation, health related issues, driver's tests, education)
